• Peanut Festival

   Week of November 2, 2003

The Earth got some visitors from the center of our solar system this week ... huge solar flares ... the biggest in years ... that begin innocently enough as huge storms on the surface of the sun.

An aurora caused by a particle storm from solar flares.

Hours later, these flares bathe Earth in a dense flow of subatomic particles that affect us Earthlings in many ways.

Click for audio Ace learns more from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration folks in Boulder.

Most of the "solar static" is invisible — but not the aurora borealis or "Northern Lights."

Little Miss Peanut

Most festivals last a day or a weekend, but the National Peanut Festival in Dothan, Alabama is so big it lasts through next Saturday.

Dothan is in the heart of Dixie's peanut country and this celebration features it all — attractions include a peanut parade, a Little Miss Peanut contest and a southern favorite: boiled peanuts.

Click for audio Ace and a National Peanut Festival representative discuss boiled peanuts ... and a "shell game."
