Lucy The Elephant
Week of August 10, 2003

Lucy The Elephant is the only remaining example of so-called "zoomorphic" architecture in the US. Built in 1881, Lucy stands 65 feet tall and is a fixture to all beachgoers in Margate, New Jersey.

Over the years Lucy has served many purposes. Originally erected to lure prospective real estate buyers to what was then South Atlantic City, the giant pachyderm was a nightclub in the 1930s.

The howdah is the traditional riding platform on elephants. On Lucy, it's an observation deck offering vistas of the Jersey shore.Photo of a 1933 Halloween party, back when Lucy was a nightclub.

These days, Lucy is a tourist attraction. Adjacent buildings include a gift shop and an interpretive center.

Lucy is the city of Margate's most famous "resident" ... appearing on city stationery and the city water tower.

The aging elephant has been the subject of numerous fundraisers in recent years including one last weekend with James Brown & Patti LaBelle — raising funds to make Lucy wheelchair accessible.

Lucy has appeared on hundreds of memorabilia items including this cigar box.
