Rock & roll and Red Rocks. Sounds like they go together — and they do ... now more than ever. Red Rocks has new stuff among the old rocks. Newest and neatest is the Visitor Center.
Construction of the 30,000-square-foot facility began in the fall of 2001. It's all done now, including the the not-to-be-missed Hall of Fame.

The new stuff is way cool. Made cooler still by the red sandstone interior that mirrors the surroundings so well.
Concert-goers here remember the old bathrooms. They're gone. In their place is polished sandstone and slate (and the always-exciting infrared ray that hopefully does no more than start the plumbing).
Haven't been to a concert here yet. Can't wait, though. From what I saw on this tour, I'm thinking the $16 mil for it all is a great investment to all future concert-goers. I'm glad Denver has kept in tune with the surrounding Cretaceous Period upheaval.
Things that have changed:
- The walkway & the area above the seats used to be asphalt. It's now rock walls and inlay with concrete.
- Plumbing — it's now hooked up to the City of Morrison sewers ... you don't want to know where the effluent used to go.
- Eats: the Ship Rock Grill restaurant & bar are a welcome alternative to stadium fare.
- Lots of new meeting rooms, big screens and other high-tech toys. Red Rocks is now home to conferences.

Things that have not changed:
- Parking lots: still small and barely paved, most with a healthy hike to your seat.
- View: still the best there is ... of any outdoor venue anywhere. Not-too-distant plans call for the removal of the current stage roofing — it'll be replaced by a retractable one.
The Visitor Center & restaurant are open year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year's Day. |
