• Elvis' Favorite Burger
• Diamond In The Rough

   Week of January 11, 2004

If he were still alive today (and more than a few believe he still is) Elvis Presley would be 69 years old.

Thursday, January 8th, was his birthday when we called back to his city of birth — Tupelo, Mississippi — to Elvis' favorite burger place, Johnnie's Drive-In.

Johnnie's is famous for its Johnnie Burgers and its BBQ.

If you find yourself in Tupelo and would like to sample the grub, do it any day but Sunday, when their sign reads "Gone to church."

Crater of Diamonds State Park:
• It's the only place in the world where people can keep the gems they find.

• An average of three diamonds per day are unearthed here.

• While the park is open year-round, the best time to visit is in the spring, when the seasonal rains make it easier to locate the biggest diamonds.

• Diamonds are the park's claim to fame but visitors also find gem quality jasper, agate and amethyst.

• Wet screening is probably the best method of finding gems amidst the Arkansas mud but many use ordinary garden tools and simply dig around in the 35 acres of open fields.

• The 40-carat "Uncle Sam," excavated at the crater in 1924, is one of the largest diamonds found in America.

Can't afford diamonds from Cartier?

Harry Winston a little too pricey?

Admittedly, these diamonds in the rough come without a guarantee or even a case ... but the price is right and you don't need to go to Antwerp or Johannesburg.

Can you afford $5 for the real deal ... plus a trip to Arkansas ... and maybe getting a little dirty?

Welcome to Crater of Diamonds State Park, just south of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

You pay the small admission price and you can dig for diamonds to your heart's content — and keep everything you find.

Sounds too good to be true? Not really. 55-year-old Harold Lay of nearby Murfreesboro is a regular back there.
